Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production - Underground Injection Control

Introduction

In 1983, the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) received primacy from the US EPA to regulate wells used to inject fluids that are associated with oil and natural gas production operations into the subsurface (Class II UIC wells) in California. A 1988 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between CalGEM and the State Water Resource Control Board (State Water Board) called for CalGEM to consult with the State and Regional Water Boards (Water Boards) during its consideration of UIC project permitting so the State Water Board could assist CalGEM with the protection of water resources.
